Spreading Of Polio

Polio is a disease which can affect anyone and everyone. There is no predefined notion as to why one does get affected by it, but when one does, here is hardly anything that one can do about it. This is why there are vaccinations available as preventive measures which need to be administered to the children in their age of infancy at specific intervals until they reach a particular age. In brief, it would be right to state that the polio disease is a caused by a virus more popularly known as polio virus. They are classified into three types namely, Type - 1, Type - 2 and Type - 3. All three types of polio viruses are equally dangerous and may lead to paralysis of a lifetime which can be dire for anyone's personal and professional life.

The most important characteristic of this virus is that it is contagious and spreads from one person to another which may be though oral routes or fecal routes. Keeping this in mind, there is an increased necessity to keep the locality neat and clean. Places with open severs are more prone to get affected by this virus compared to those which are decent in sanitary upkeep. As far as the oral route is concerned, there is no option but to wear masks so that no foreign particles go inside the body. Fortunately, more than 90% of the cases of polio recover whereas the rest fall victim. The victims tend to lose a section or part of the body as they seize to function.

Medically, the polio virus affects the nerve cells which are responsible for carrying signals to the various body parts from the brain. When these nerve cells start getting destroyed, that stops responding according to the wishes of the individual leading to paralysis. The location of the nerve cell that gets destructed decides which part gets affected. In the most general cases, it is the legs that get affected the most compared to the other body parts like hands and face. We are all aware of the importance of these parts in our lives, not being able to walk or run is something which is a dreaded dream for most of us, but a reality of polio.

Apart from these external features described by the Health Tips Blog, the polio virus also has the threat of paralyzing the internal systems of the body. While a paralyzed leg would not stop a person from living life, failure of lungs or the respiratory system sure can. Seeing this, with the help of the WHO (World Health Organization), almost all the countries across the world have been able to impart vaccinations or immunizations as some might call it to every new born in the country. However, there is still a risk of polio with some of the countries still fighting to impart it to all. Steps are being taken on this front but they are not enough. Infants have the highest risk of acquiring it from which, it may get transferred to the parents and the whole cycle begins.
